Couples Therapy

People come to couples therapy for any number of reasons. Couples counselling and relationship therapy can help you navigate conflict and settle ongoing disputes. Sometimes couples come to therapy as a checkpoint before marriage or moving to the next significant step in the relationship, like cohabiting or starting a family. Often, people find themselves in couples therapy for relationship intervention at the height of ongoing conflict. For example, imminent break-up, separation, divorce or in response to a breach of trust. Couples therapy and relationship counselling works best as a prevention and maintenance option, although intervention can also be effective.

Couples Therapy Topics

Some common topics in couples therapy includes communication, conflict resolution, apologies, learning to live together/cohabitation, perpetual problems, sexual intimacy and building trust.

Couples in Crisis

For couples in crisis, I often recommend individual therapy before starting couples therapy. We need space to process relational traumas. Individual history, attachment, behaviour and relationship patterns that contribute to relationship breakdown can vary, and individual counselling can help to deepen self-awareness, promote healing and prevent future relationship crises.

Couples Therapy Treatment

My goal as a couples therapist is to help individuals restore their sense of fondness towards one another, gain skills for healthy communication, learn to resolve conflicts faster, feel emotionally closer, support one another in individual and joined dreams, and learn to have fun and keep the spirit of enjoyment alive in their relationship.

How does treatment look?

Gottman Method
Conflict resolution
Perpetual problems
Relationship values & expectations
Emotional & sexual intimacy
Creating a shared vision

Note: Couples who are experiencing physical abuse and acute crisis or trauma will be referred for individual therapy before couples therapy.
