People come to couples therapy for any number of reasons. Couples counselling and relationship therapy can help you navigate and resolve ongoing conflict and settle ongoing disputes. Sometimes couples come to therapy as a checkpoint before marriage or moving to the next significant step in the relationship, such as cohabiting or starting a family. Often, people find themselves in couples therapy for intervention relationship counselling at the height of ongoing conflict. Examples of a relationship crisis would be an imminent break-up, separation, divorce, or in response to an affair or infidelity. Couples therapy and relationship counselling works best as a prevention and maintenance option, although intervention can also be highly effective.

Couples in Crisis
When couples therapy is intended for acute relationship recovery in a crisis, partners may be recommended for individual counselling at the same time or before proceeding on a couples therapy journey. Individual history, attachment, behaviour, and relationship patterns that contribute to relationship breakdown can vary greatly, and so individual counselling can help to deepen self-awareness and prevent future relationship crises.
